It was a warm, clear mild summer day, exactly fifty-two years
ago on, June 6, the sky was blue and the waters calm as the USS Liberty performed its responsibility
on a reconnaissance cruise in the international waters of the Mediterranean.
Captain McGonegle had every reason to relax and feel safe. A very large U.S.
flag waved in the wind and we were not at war. Overhead jets of our long time
friend and ally insured our protection.
Then suddenly, without warning, these friendly jets turned
on the Liberty firing bullets and
dropping bombs. Torpedo boats fired
rockets blowing a forty-foot hole into its side at the water line. When the captain
ordered abandon ship, our so-called ally strafed our sailors in their life
boats. Everything possible was done to sink the Liberty. When the attack was finally over, 34 US servicemen had
been killed and 171 injured. Why the sudden attack?
To stop messages from reaching the
world that Israel was preparing to invade Syria and occupy the Golan Heights. .
The enemy that day was not Russia, North Korea or Chine. Our enemy was long
time friend, Israel.
I know it’s hard for most Americans to think that Israel
would deliberately attack an American ship, but it is impossible to deny that
that is exactly what happened.

The film gives a series of testimonies by many survivors of the U.S.S. Liberty and also by some relevant U.S. government officials. They explain the reason for the attack at 42:35. The film makes extremely clear that Israeli forces committed a huge crime against their leading ally as well as war crimes and "crime against humanity" in machine-gunning life rafts. At 43:35, one survivor discusses how the average Israeli should not be held responsible for the attack, nor even the military personnel who followed orders to carry out the attack, but rather "4-6-8-10" individuals in the control room who ordered the attack." The film concludes with these succinct and perceptive words at 48:13 -- "Since the attack on the Liberty, the USA and Israel have grown ever closer. At the time, George Ball, U.S. Undersecretary of State, noticed that it seemed clear to the Isrealis that, as the American leaders did not have the courage to punish them for the blatant murder of American citizens, they would let them get away with anything." That certainly seems to be true. Both Israel and America need much better leaders (and more perceptive citizens).
The attack on the USS Liberty was to test the subservience LBJ who collaborated in the assassination of JFK. He passed the test with flying colors. Since then, all US administrations, perhaps apart from Carter & Reagan, slavishly complied with their directives. In case no-one is aware they have the most dangerous crime syndicate in the US. A bunch of thugs rule the US and no-one dares to challenge them.
